Vale Ian Redpath
Ian Redpath—1941-2024. A first-class innings, much like his first-game 97 against South Africa at the MCG.
It was January 1964; things were done differently back then; we should take notice. Redders was invited to open the innings for his country approximately 30 minutes before the first ball went down. He was that sure he would assume 12th man duties that packing his bats was an afterthought. As always, Redders didn't disappoint anyone, compiling a signature innings that ended just three runs shy of a maiden century.
Ian Redpath remained a fixture of Australia's side through the 1960s and 1970s, returning 4,734 Test runs at an average of 43.45. He is a national treasure.
I came to Geelong in 2020 to coach his beloved cricket club. Redders' welcome was reassuring and genuine, and I will always be grateful for the friendship that formed. There are so many conversations to recount; for now, it's a feeling of sadness, loss, and reflection.
